What is Digestive Fire or Agni according to Ayurveda?

Agni is a Sanskrit word which means digestive fire. It represents enzymes responsible for digestion and metabolism. Agni (digestive fire) plays a vital role in metabolism and proper functioning of the body. In essence, it is the digestive power of the body. Imbalance of Agni is the primary reason for formation of Ama, which in turn is the reason for several diseases. Hence, Agni is quite important to ensure optimal health.

Most people think that food provides nourishment and complete health to the human body. Of course, it is true, but not completely. The other important and missing aspect is that of Agni (digestive fire). Agni plays a significant role in this connection because tissue elements like Rasa (Lymph), Rakta (blood) etc. which don’t form nor get nourishment from undigested food particles. Balanced Agni helps protect us from diseases, by improving digestion and flushing out Amas (toxins).

To maintain a good “digestive fire” or “Agni” • Eat food on time
• Eat fresh vegetables and fruits
• Eat well cooked food and vegetables
• Have 1 tea spoon ghee everyday
• Sip warm water throughout the day
