Psoriasis (Ekakustha)

  • Ayurveda has explained many skin diseases, which resembles Psoriasis. Psoriasis can be considered as the vitiation of Vata (air) and Kapha (water+earth). Accumulation of low potency Toxins (Dooshi vishas/Ama), are the basic pathological changes taking place in the system.

  • consumption of food that cannot be eaten together; excessive intake of yogurt, black gram, seafood, sour and salted items etc are some of the aggravating factors. Alcohol, tobacco and stress will act as catalysts here.
  • Ayurveda aims at detoxifying the body or removal of toxins from the body fluids. It is achieved by 'Panchakarma' treatments. This includes internal and external medications:
    Consumption of medicated ghee
  •  Detoxifying, by inducing vomiting (Vamana) and purgation (Virechana).
  • Followed by either medicated buttermilk dripping overhead (Dhara) and herbal paste over the entire body.

  • Lifestyle changes and strict regimens will be advised by the physician. If it is in the initial stage it can be cured without much delay. Otherwise regular treatment continuing for months will be needed. All depends on how the patient accepts the treatment modalities and how strictly he/she follows the dietary protocol for the rest of the life.

  • A strict diet regime has to be followed during the entire treatment period and it is better to continue as vegetarian. Yogurt, black gram, chilies and salted thing have to be restricted. It is better to avoid refrigerated/chilled foods. Patient must keep a state of mental calmnes

Patient’s age – 41 yrs Sex – M

Presenting Complaint– Severe dry skin with rashes, itching, discolouration and bleeding (on itch)and flaky skin for the past 1 year, condition was worsening 3 months prior to our consultation at Om Vedic.

Increase in itching and the condition had worsened after taking some other alternative treatment (2 months prior to consultation at Om Vedic). The skin disorder had sperad from legs to chest, buttocks and back area, with blackish discolouration and inflammation with scales that peeled off on drying. The skin was becoming very dry within an hour of application of moisturisers. Patient was so depressed that he wanted to leave his job as he could not concentrate on his work due to immense discomfort. He was having rashes on the forehead as well, due to which he avoided going out in public.

Observation - Tongue was coated, sleep - Disturbed, Appetite - Normal, Bowels- soft and irregular.

Approach of Ayurveda - It was clear on examination that patient had accumulated lot of toxins(ama)in the body over the period of time.

Primarily patient was put on strict diet regime (no spicy food, hot , pungent and fermented food, etc,.), for the first 1 month.

Secondly - Patient was put on intense and series of therapies along with Ayurvedic herbal medicines.

In 1st two weeks patient was not feeling any visible improvement but reduced itching. As his therapy continued for another 15 days, he started to feel the improvement as the skin was getting smoother and more moisturised was able to concentrate better at work. He then started having full faith in the therapy. After a month, he was very satisfied with the improvement. Later he was given some external ointments, internal medicines and herbal water to use for bath, and was advised to continue following the strict diet.

After 1 month he came for his follow up, skin was getting normal, no new rashes were seen, itching was completely gone. He got back to his normal working life. Medicines were reduced and was put on last stage of therapy, to avoid relapse of the condition. He was still advised to be careful with his diet.

Now the patient is completely fine and happy, after 3 months of intense treatment.
