Originating from the ancient healing system of Ayurveda, which translates to “knowledge of life,” Shirodhara is a Sanskrit term composed of two words: “shiro” meaning head, and “dhara” meaning flow. Together, they describe the continuous pouring of warm herbal oil or other liquids onto the forehead in a rhythmic and steady manner.
The Process:
Shirodhara typically begins with a consultation with an Ayurvedic practitioner who assesses the individual’s unique constitution (dosha) and health concerns. Based on this assessment, specific oils, herbs, or liquids are chosen for the treatment.
During the therapy, the individual lies down on a comfortable table or mat while a specially designed vessel called a “dhara pot” is positioned above their forehead. The therapist then pours the warm liquid in a gentle stream, allowing it to flow back and forth across the forehead in a continuous motion.
