Avipathi Choornam is a famous ayurvedic herbal powder, used in treatment of pitta imbalance disorders as Shodhana ( Purification)& Shamana (Alleviating) medication.
Vipathi means calamity, adversity or misfortune . So avipathi literally means which does not produce any harmful effects. As name suggests, Avipathi choornam is one of the simplest and effective herbal mixture commonly used by all ayurvedic doctors for “Virechana” ( Therapeutic Purgation- Panchkarma) without any harmful effects.
Ingredients:
Trikatu –
Sunthi- Dry ginger ( Zingiber Officinale)
Marich- Black pepper ( Piper Nigrum)
Pippali- Long pepper ( Piper Longum)
Trijata-
Dalchini– Cinnamon ( Cinnamomum zeylanicum)
Tejpata – Indian bay leaf-(Cinnamomum tamala)
Ela – Cardamom – (Elettaria cardamomum)
Musta – Nut grass – (Cyperus rotundus)
Vidanga – False black pepper – (Embelia ribes)
Amalaki – Indian gooseberry – (Emblica officinalis )
Trivrit – (Operculina turpethum)
Mishri – Crystallized Sugar
Effect on doshas – It strengthens agni (digestive fire) without aggravating pitta. This is traditionally used to remove excess pitta from the body.
Properties – Deepan- Pachan (Digestive &carminative) ,Virechan (purgative), Mutral ( Mild Diuretic) , Shothagna ( Anti- inflammatory)
Therapeutic action-
- Amlapittahara- It helps to relieve gastritis/ hyperacidity very quickly.
- Vibandham malamootrayoho – It helps to relieve constipation and difficulty in urination.
- Agnimandya – it helps to relieve indigestion.
- Prameha – it is used in treating diseases of urinary system.
- Durnama nashanam – It is used even in chronic conditions.
Indications- It is used in Ayurvedic treatment of all types of Pitta imbalance disorders such as hyperacidity, gastritis, GERD, migraine, excessive burning sensation all over the body, increased thirst and digestion, stomatitis, exhaustion due to sun exposure, sun burn, dizziness etc.
It is also useful in treatment of liver disorders such as jaundice and alcoholism .
Dosage:
1 – 3 grams once or twice a day, before or after food with warm water , or as directed by ayurvedic physician.
Side effects: Since it contains sugar, Diabetic patients should take with doctor’s advice. Overdosage may cause diarrhoea and stomach ache.
Children, pregnant and lactating mother should seek doctor’s advice before taking this product.
